The American men’s gymnastics team is now ready to compete. Three-time national champion Brody Malone, along with trial winner Fred Richard, has formed his second Olympic team. Asher Hong, Paul Juda, and Stephen Nedoroscik complete the five-member team aiming to end a 16-year medal drought at the Olympics.

Richard secured his spot by winning the trials and placing in the top three in three competitions: floor exercise, parallel bars, and high bar. Malone also secured a place in the top five in all events except floor exercise, despite recovering from a serious knee injury less than 18 months ago, which required three surgeries.

It’s no surprise they focused on math. Winning medals is the team’s top priority, and the scoring format in the finals means the rank order isn’t always for the best teams. Teams compete in each event with three gymnasts, and their scores are calculated.

This means you need a team that can consistently score high in all events. The team’s capacity to score the highest scores was highlighted by the selection committee through the application of an intricate mathematical procedure. Despite missing out on a spot in the Paris team after finishing third in Olympic trials, Shane Wiskus described the third place as an opportunity to participate in the Paris team.

However, math was not in his favor. Unlike the women’s gymnastics team, which is selected by a committee, the men’s team was locked in based on average scores between national and trial championships. And that formula left Wiskus, a graduate of Minnesota, where he grew up, as an option for the games.

“I spent the best two days of my life in competition,” he said. “So I can do it.” Brett McClure, high-performance director for the U.S. men’s gymnastics program, said the math made a direct decision – but it wasn’t easy. McClure said, “If you don’t feel those emotions for these unbelievable athletes, then you’re not human.”

“Every athlete there has put everything at stake, training for their entire lives. It’s very charming as well. For those who are unable to finish it, it is awful. It’s great for people that finish it. Their lives are changed by it. So the roller coaster of emotions is completely real, and it’s never easy to handle in my position.
