Real Madrid’s Unyielding Triumph: Carlo Ancelotti’s Testament to Resilience in Champions League Victory
Carlo Ancelotti lauded Real Madrid’s unwavering spirit following their victory in the penalty shootout against Manchester City in the Champions League, emphasizing, “When everyone wrote us off, Real Madrid showcased their resilience.
In the second leg of the quarterfinals at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, Madrid initially surged ahead with a goal from Rodrygo, only to be equalized by Kevin De Bruyne, leading to extra time.
Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin emerged as the hero, thwarting penalties from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, propelling Madrid into the semifinals after an exhilarating 4-4 aggregate draw, where they are primed to face Bayern Munich.
Ancelotti shared with Movistar, “Our only way out was to capitalize on our chances – we seized one earlier – and then defend resolutely. There’s no alternative against a formidable opponent like City.”
Madrid dominated proceedings for 120 minutes, commanding 67% possession and unleashing 33 shots compared to City’s eight.
“I’ve witnessed Real Madrid’s resilience on numerous occasions. It’s deeply ingrained in the club’s ethos, uncovering hidden strengths within us,” Ancelotti observed. “During the shootout, we were confident of forging ahead. Andriy [Lunin] exhibited an exceptional performance.”
“I hold great admiration for teams that demonstrate immense sacrifice. It’s the sole pathway to victory in such high-stakes encounters.”
Lunin, 25, initially began the season as Madrid’s backup goalkeeper. However, due to a long-term injury to Thibaut Courtois, Lunin seized the opportunity and cemented his place in the team.
Reflecting on his performance, Lunin expressed, “I’m physically drained. This match marks a milestone in my career – 120 minutes of intense action in the Champions League, away from home. Credit goes to my teammates who endured, ran tirelessly, and fought relentlessly, propelling us to the semifinals.”
“You can’t always monopolize possession or be the superior team,” Lunin added. “Our collective effort sustained us for 120 minutes. I couldn’t have envisioned enduring such intensity for merely five minutes.”
Captain Nacho underscored the unfamiliar terrain, remarking, “We’re accustomed to dictating play, but tonight, we showcased our defensive prowess… These are the enchanting nights you dream of as a child, sending shivers down your spine.”
Though Jude Bellingham remained subdued on the scoresheet, his impact proved pivotal. He not only converted his penalty but also orchestrated the move culminating in Madrid’s crucial goal, expressing relief after dethroning the defending champions.
Bellingham pondered, “After facing City previously, there’s a sense of being on the brink of triumph, only to see it slip through your fingers.”Overcoming them demands monumental effort. I remained on edge until the final whistle.”
“When City mounted their relentless assault against us, it was a moment where most teams would have buckled under pressure.”. Yet, we stood resolute, grinding out the next 30 or 40 minutes with sheer determination.”
“It’s a momentous occasion. My brother witnessed me donning the Real Madrid jersey for the first time today. Such instances fill me with immense pride, reaffirming why I pursue this passion.”
Madrid is scheduled to journey to Munich for the first leg against Bayern on April 30 or May 1, with the return leg slated at the Bernabeu on May 7 or 8. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain will square off against Borussia Dortmund in the other semifinal clash.
