Mexico secured a 1-0 win against Jamaica in their first Group B match of Copa America, but the celebration was tempered by captain Edson Alvarez’s injury early in the game. Alvarez fell and left the field in tears holding his hamstring in the 30th minute.
Highlights of Mexico vs Jamaica, Copa America 2024:
Jamaica, trailing Mexico by 38 rankings, thought they had scored their first Copa America goal when Michael Antonio netted a header within five minutes into the second half, but the video assistant referee ruled it offside.
After that scare, Mexico picked up their pace. Luis Chavez, Santiago Jimenez, and Gerardo Arteaga tested Jamaican goalkeeper Jahmali Waite multiple times. Arteaga eventually broke the deadlock with a powerful strike in the 69th minute.
With this result, Mexico leveled with Venezuela on three points, following their earlier 2-1 victory over Ecuador in their second Group B encounter the day before.
